The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes was first run in 1919 as the Pimlico Oaks, in 1952 the name was changed to its present style to compliment the Preakness Stakes and to acknowledge the Maryland State flower. The inaugural edition was won by Milkmaid who went on to earn United States Champion 3-Yr-Old Filly honors. Milkmaid's owner J. K. L. Ross had a very good 1919 racing campaign, also winning the first U.S. Triple Crown with the colt Sir Barton.
In its 88th running in 2012, the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is one of three races that are the de facto distaff counterparts to the Triple Crown races, along with the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and the Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park. They have not, however, been officially referred to as the "Filly Triple Crown." That distinction goes to three races run at Belmont and Saratoga Race Course in New York, now officially called the Triple Tiara to avoid trademark conflicts. However, consideration has been given within the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), the sport's governing body in the United States, to change the Triple Tiara series to the Kentucky Oaks, Black-Eyed Susan and Acorn.[1]
Sixteen fillies that won The Black-Eyed Susan went on to be named a Champion according to the Maryland Jockey Club, those fillies include; Silverbulletday, Serena's Song, Davona Dale, Office Queen, Airmans Guide, Real Delight, Wistful III, But Why Not, Gallorette, Twilight Tear, Vagrancy, Fairy Chant, Nellie Morse, Maid at Arms, Cleopatra and Milkmaid.[2]
Davona Dale is the only filly to win the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, Mother Goose Stakes, and Coaching Club American Oaks. Nellie Morse is the only winner to also win the Preakness Stakes.
The Kentucky Oaks, the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, and the Acorn Stakes are the counterparts to the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, held at Churchill Downs, Pimlico Race Course and Belmont Park, respectively. The "Filly Triple Crown", known as the Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing, is a series of three races at the Belmont Park. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) has considered changing the Triple Tiara series to the three counterparts of the Triple Crown.

On September 7, 2010, Pimlico's corporate owner MI Developments Inc., in conjunction with MID’s premier racing properties, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields, Portland Meadows, Pimlico Race Course, XpressBet Inc. and AmTote International Inc., announced the introduction of the BLACK-EYED SUSAN 2.2, a significant bonus program for fillies which could award $2,200,000.00 or 2.2 million in bonuses ($2 million to the owner and $200,000 to the trainer) to the winner of the 2011 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.
The Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 is designed to allow both east and west coast based three-year-old fillies to qualify by having the preliminary races at Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields and Portland Meadows. To qualify for the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2, a three-year-old filly must first win the requisite qualifying races, plus the Gulfstream Park Oaks. MID also announced that it will pay all reasonable shipping costs for any west coast-based three-year-old filly eligible for either the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 or the XpressBet Consolation Prize to compete in the Gulfstream Park Oaks and/or the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.
In addition, there will be an AmTote Jockey Bonus worth $50,000 to the winning jockey of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes who also rode the winner of one of the qualifying races and competed in at least one other qualifying race. To qualify for the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 at Gulfstream Park, a horse must win the Forward Gal Stakes on Saturday, January 29, 2011 plus win the Davona Dale on Saturday, February 26, 2011 and then win the Gulfstream Park Oaks on Saturday, April 2, 2011. To qualify for the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 at Santa Anita Park, a horse must win the Las Virgenes on Saturday, February 5, 2011 plus win the Santa Anita Oaks on Saturday, March 5, 2011 and then win the Gulfstream Park Oaks on Saturday, April 2, 2011. To qualify for the bonus from Golden Gate Fields a filly must win the California Oaks, which is scheduled to be run on Saturday, January 1, 2011 and goes on to win the Santa Anita Oaks and then wins the Gulfstream Park Oaks. The winner of the Portland Meadows Oaks, which is scheduled to be run on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Portland Meadows, will also qualify for the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 if it goes on to win the Santa Anita Oaks and then the Gulfstream Park Oaks.
The XpressBet Consolation Prize will be awarded to a runner in the California Oaks, Forward Gal, Portland Meadows Oaks, Las Virgenes or Davona Dale; plus finished first, second or third in the Santa Anita Oaks or the Gulfstream Park Oaks if it wins the Black-Eyed Susan, provided that horse was not eligible for the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2. The XpressBet Consolation Prize of $220,000 will be awarded $200,000 to the owner and $20,000 to the trainer.
